Dissertations and Theses – DSpace: http://library.uvic.ca/site/lib/dig/uvthesis/index.html
The library’s page for thesis information. This page includes information about DSpace, which is the UVic Institutional Repository (IR) for faculty research, graduate theses/dissertations, and other knowledge generated at/by the university. Increasingly, graduate students are encouraged to deposit their theses in it. By having your thesis in an IR you dramatically increase its visibility and discovery through online searches. It’s worth looking at other institutions for their institutional repository to see what they contain. U of T’s, for one, is called T-Space.

Essential Graduate and Faculty Research Tips: http://library.uvic.ca/site/lib/instruction/research/gradfactips.html

RefWorks
RefWorks is an online database which enables you to gather, save, and organize your references in one place. RefWorks can also format your bibliographies using the references within your account. As a UVic student, you have access to a free account. For account creation, help, and log-in: http://library.uvic.ca/site/lib/instruction/refworks/index.html

Current Awareness Services
Knowing which journals are the top research publications in your field will allow you to keep up-to-date with new developments. You can identify these titles using Journal Citation Reports through the ISI Web of Knowledge suite of databases.
Most of the major databases provide for a free account for individuals. Using this account will allow you to request regular updates of new journal issues added to the databases and new search results for your queries of interest. It will also allow you to be notified when a particular author’s work has been cited by others. These services are often called “alerts”.

Reference Services
http://library.uvic.ca/site/vref/default.html
Reference services are available in person at the “Library Help” desk on the main floor of McPherson Library. You can also email general research questions, as well as ask for research help via online chat. You can also reach the reference librarians via phone. The above webpage has all the contact information for these services.

Loan Periods/Information
Graduate students may borrow up to 200 regular items from the libraries at one time. Five renewals are allowed. Overdue fines for these materials are $1.00/day. Loan periods for Graduates are from September to April and from May to August.
Graduate students in Canadian universities also qualify for reciprocal borrowing privileges, that is, they may borrow books from other university libraries. Contact our Loan Desk in advance for further information. Students will need a special id card to present at other institutions. This other card is issues at our Loan Desk.

Suggest Library Resources
Graduate students at the University of Victoria are encouraged to suggest additions to the Library's collection that support the research and teaching programs of the university. Requests will be evaluated based on the library’s collection policies and the availability of funds. Send suggestions to me, Justin Harrison, at justinh@uvic.ca.
